The Why

Now more than ever, we need strong, connected organisations working effectively for social, economic and environmental change. But there are a million things that stop our organisations from making lasting change, from governance to fundraising to the lack of a proper strategy. It has become all too common to see great organisations crumble under the weight of the huge issues we are all grappling with.

Neon’s OrgBuilders is here to change that.

The What

OrgBuilders is an 18 month coaching programme for early stage organisations to receive specialist coaching, led by Charlotte Millar, Head of Training for NEON and co-founder of the Finance Innovation Lab. The 10 Participating orgs will be either in the early stages of operating or in a distinct period of transformation (e.g. re-writing your strategy or massively growing). As a participant, you will receive:

  • Monthly one-on-one coaching on all aspects of organisation building: from developing your theory of change to fundraising and team building
  • Three annual training days, with all programme participants, on the fundamentals of organisation building
  • Access to dedicated mentors to support on particularly thorny aspects of organisation building such as governance and HR

After the first year of the programme, all participants will join action learning sets –  facilitated peer coaching groups of 6-8 participants- for approximately 6 months to continue collaborating and supporting each other. The result will be more focused organisations with better strategy, smoother running and better set-up to succeed.
The cohort will represent some of the most exciting social and economic justice work taking place in the UK. Participants will learn from one another and we expect to see significant growth and collective impact.

Each place on the course is worth around £4,500. We have scholarships available as we don’t want to exclude any participants from the programme. However, if you are from an organisation with a budget over £100k we would ask you to consider making a contribution to the programme. We can work that out with you individually. If you have any questions, or want to discuss this further, drop Charlotte a line at

NEON is a network of people working for environmental and social justice. On our OrgBuilders programme, Charlotte Millar will be the lead coach, with close to two decades of experience in strategy, organisation building and leadership. In addition to her role as Head of Training at NEON, Charlotte is a co-founder and strategist with the Finance Innovation Lab, Chair of Positive Money, and a Trustee of the Public Interest Research Centre. Charlotte has designed and delivered multiple training programmes building knowledge, skills and leadership for systemic change, including Campaign Lab: a 6-month training programme for campaigners and the the Finance Innovation Lab’s Fellowship: a 6-month incubation programme for social entrepreneurs in alternative finance. In her (limited!) spare time, Charlotte helps organisations collaborate for systemic change through strategic facilitation, as well as mentoring and supporting civil society leaders to grow as collaborative leaders.

“Over the last 2 years I have received coaching from Charlotte Millar on strategy development, team culture and other aspects of building Positive Money as an organisation. Charlotte’s input into my work has transformed my thinking, allowed me to become a more confident leader, and resulted in a clear strategy that has empowered our team, satisfied our Board of Directors, and has led to our increased funding.”

Fran Boait, Executive Director, Positive Money

Charlotte will joined by a range of dedicated mentors  with experience in building impactful organisations from across the sector.

The OrgBuilder participants will be:

  • A kickass group of people committed to building change both in their own organisations and within the OrgBuilders network
  • 1-2 people from 10-12 organisations which are either in the early stages of operating (0-7 years) or in a distinct period of transformation
  • We are particularly keen to support work on housing, energy democracy, migration and precarious work, but welcome applications from organisations working on other issues
  • We will prioritise applications from organisations that are run by and/or support communities directly affected by social and economic injustice
  • We welcome applications from all types of organisations – you might be campaigning, training others, writing policy etc.

The when & where

  • The programme will run April 2017 – September 2018. This will include monthly coaching, the three annual training days, and 6 months of a peer facilitated action learning set.
  • This will be a national cohort of 10-12 organisations, so we encourage organisations to apply from all regions of the UK. Monthly coaching can be conducted in person or virtually.
