The New Economy Spokesperson Network is a project, run jointly by the New Economy Organisers Network (NEON) and the New Economics Foundation, to substantially boost the number of progressive, diverse voices in the mainstream media.

So far we have trained, coached and provided booking support to 56 spokespeople from civil society working on social, environmental and economic issues. The project aims to overcome the lack of coverage of key issues in the media.

Our spokespeople have already had over 450 high-profile broadcast media appearances, including Sky News, BBC 5 Live, BBC News, Al Jazeera, LBC, Channel 4 News, ITV News, Newsnight and the Today programme.

Now we are opening applications for the next round of training, which will be held in London on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd June 2017.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • The New Economy Spokesperson Network is a platform to train more media spokespeople to communicate their ideas effectively and work to actively get them into the media.
  • The network accepts applications twice a year. The next round of training will be limited to 10 people. The initial 2 day training course will include intensive media training from communications experts. Participants will also receive training from framing experts, producers and journalists.
  • Following training, members of the network will then be promoted to media outlets by our communications team who offer expert advice to boost applicant profiles.
  • Throughout the year members of the spokesperson network will be supported by follow-on monthly evening training sessions that will give trainees the chance to meet up, peer-review media appearances and receive support from media professionals.
  • The training, support and booking service we provide for members of our network costs us £3000 per person. We ask participants to pay a proportion of that cost depending on the ability of you and/or your organisation to pay. Full scholarships are also available for those who otherwise would not be able to take part.

WHO CAN APPLY TO BE IN THE NETWORK?

We are looking for people:

  • Who feel confident speaking about at least one topic in the areas of social, economic or political justice (e.g. migration, inequality, banking, health care, education) and who have a background the media would likely book (e.g. teacher, economist or activist with direct experience of the issue at hand).
  • With plausible grounds to believe that they would be booked into the media (e.g. because of work opportunities or standpoint) and preferably with at least one experience of broadcast media.
  • Participants must be available for the initial training course. A commitment to attend the monthly follow-on evening training sessions is also required.
  • Participants must also be willing to accept media bookings wherever practicable (where appropriate, participants must attain authorisation from their employer).
  • We especially want to recruit voices that are not heard enough in our media. Women, BAME candidates and members of other underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • If you are concerned about the cost of the programme, there are a number of scholarships available.

For further information on the programme please contact Rosie Baines or Frances Legg.

FAQ's

I’m worried I’m not qualified enough or that my subject area isn’t right?

Give Frances a call on +44 (0)20 7820 6357. We’d love to chat about your situation – we’ve found that those most nervous of applying have been some of the best participants!

Does my subject area match your interest?

We’re looking for people who can speak about social, economic or political justice (e.g. migration, inequality, banking, health care, education) and with direct experience of issues at hand i.e. teachers, nurses or experts on subjects i.e. economists, activists campaigning on issues etc. So, in other words: fairly broad areas. And if in doubt give us a ring.

How much does it cost to take part?

It costs us about £3000 to provide one place on the programme for a year. We ask participants to pay a proportion of that cost depending on the ability of you and/or your organisation to pay. Full scholarships are also available for those who otherwise would not be able to attend.

I already do a lot of media work – should I do this?

Yes. Three reasons: 1) Even established performers will get a lot from the training process (as witnessed by the improvement of seasoned media performers after the training) 2) You’ll be booked through the service, boosting your profile 3) Most importantly the network will put you at the heart of a community helping to hone your messaging, breadth of issues and connections to others.

How will you book members of the network?

We keep our eyes on the news agenda, then like most large organisations we’ll offer up members of the network for comment (based on your availability). We also book you based on upcoming events or opportunities that your work or activism offers.

Can you support my travel and accommodation needs?

Please list your requirements in the application form and we will do all that we can to help.
