Narrative Connections

The NEON Comms Hub presents Narrative Connections - a series of online sessions featuring a conversation between an international and a UK based organiser about messaging and campaigning on shared issues. We want this series to create more pathways for sharing knowledge and building relationships internationally. Each speaker will talk about their campaign strategy, focusing on the frames and messages they used to mobilise people. They will explore tactics, challenges and wins.

Running date

This September we will have three incredible conversations:

The cost of winning: How Labour and the Democrats weaponise pro police narratives on the 11th of September (More info and registration here

Jeralyn Cave, racial justice lead at the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) in the US, will be joined by human rights and civil liberties campaigner, Emmanuelle Andrews to discuss how both Labour and the Democrats weaponise pro-policing narratives in elections. They will share their analyses of how effective the opposition’s messaging has been in their different contexts, how harmful pro-police narratives led to candidates winning or losing elections and what groups are doing to repair this damage.

Building youth-led movements to demand reparations and climate justice on the 19th of September (More info and registration here)

Anthony Torres Vidal from Get Free in the US - a movement mobilising young people for reparations - will be joined by Green New Deal Rising’s Fatima Ibrahim to talk about similarities and differences in tactics to reach and move young people. They will discuss developing messaging for young people to use on digital platforms and on the doorstep to organise for reparations and climate justice.

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs: Bridging the gap between the climate movement and unions on the 25th September (More info and registration here)

Lakshmi Thevasagayam from Wir fahren zusammen in Germany, a campaign that worked with unions and climate activists for better worker’s rights for bus drivers, will speak to NEON’s Head of Messaging, Dora Meade who is leading the messaging work with the TUC around a worker-led transition in the steel and automotive industry. This conversation will cover developing messaging guides for workers and the climate movement, turning bus drivers and steel plant workers into effective spokespeople, mobilising climate activists to the picket line and the challenges and huge opportunities this collaboration brings.
