Migration
Overview
Everyone – wherever they are from – deserves the chance to live in safety and to flourish. And when we talk about a new economy that serves the interests of people and planet, that means an economy in which everyone’s needs are met.
Yet right now, there are many challenges for people seeking a new home or sanctuary and the organisations working to support them. Much of the media and many politicians are pushing the migration debate to the right, while advocating a punitive approach that causes harm and leans into racist narratives.
On the ground, migrants and asylum seekers are dealing with a deterioration of support from government, and poor accommodation and low wages, which pushes them into destitution and places extra pressure on movement resources.
Yet everywhere there are powerful and inspiring stories too - of migrants organising for higher wages and better accommodation - benefitting all - and of communities coming together in solidarity to push back against divisive narratives.
It is a priority for NEON to continue to work with and build the power of the migration movement, while facilitating effective cross-movement collaboration so that demands for transformative change in housing and climate also reflect the experiences and needs of migrants, strengthening broad coalitions for change.
