Worker-Led Transition

A Movement Building Hub Programme

Worker-Led Transition

The Worker-led Transition programme is a ground-breaking collaboration between NEON and the TUC to support unions and workers in manufacturing industries to secure a just transition.

The TUC estimates as many as 800,000 manufacturing jobs depend on a transition to new technologies and new forms of production to meet climate targets and protect good jobs. So we have to act, now.

A key part of NEON’s work on this project is building strategic collaboration between the climate movement and trade union movement, while changing the public narrative about a transition and who it is for.

A brief history

The project was launched as a pilot in 2023 and has grown significantly since. We have built extensive relationships with reps across key industries, developed messaging, trained and booked manufacturing workers as spokespeople, and supported workers to develop and push for transition proposals in their workplaces. We’ve also worked with climate organisations to deliver political education on the importance of a worker-led transition, guided them to take hands-on action in support of it, and ran strategy workshops on organising in industrial communities.

Movement Projects

The Worker-led Transition is a NEON movement project. We use these projects and partnerships to make focused interventions that build the organising skills, strategic capacity and alignment of social movements to tackle politically pressing problems.
